John James Barralet’s customers who requested contemporary industrial landscapes also extended to Delaware. This fragment of a bill depicts stages of sheep wool processing on the banks of the Brandywine Creek, with a stone mill in the background. The proprietors, brothers Joshua and Thomas Gilpin, were Quakers who established a paper mill on the Brandywine in 1787. Their entrepreneurial ventures, as this billhead indicates, included a woolen mill that was later used for cotton. The calico sample book included in this exhibition is made with Gilpin Mill paper.
