American newspapers such as The Emancipator and The National Anti-Slavery Standard reported O’Connell’s writings and actions, and his anti-slavery statements resonated for decades. One admirer was Frederick Douglass, the formerly enslaved man born in Talbot County, Maryland, who became a powerful American voice for abolition. In 1845 Douglass visited Ireland and O’Connell, who deeply influenced Douglass’s public speaking style.
